Modern EV batteries are lithium-ion based — the same fundamental chemistry used in smartphones and laptops, but scaled up dramatically. A typical electric car battery pack contains thousands of individual cells and can store enough energy to travel several hundred kilometres on a single charge.
Electric motors deliver torque instantaneously, which is why even modestly priced electric cars can feel surprisingly quick off the line. This characteristic also enables precise control, which is leveraged in advanced stability and traction systems.

The Environmental Case

The environmental credentials of electric vehicles depend significantly on the electricity source used to charge them. In countries with high proportions of renewable electricity in their grid, EVs produce dramatically lower lifetime carbon emissions than equivalent petrol or diesel vehicles, even accounting for the energy-intensive manufacturing of battery packs.
As electricity grids become progressively cleaner — a trend underway in most developed economies — the environmental advantage of EVs strengthens over time. A vehicle purchased today will produce fewer emissions over its lifetime than the same vehicle model purchased a decade ago, simply because the grid it charges from will become greener year by year.

Advances in Battery Technology

Battery technology is advancing rapidly. Energy density — the amount of energy that can be stored per unit of weight — has increased substantially over the past decade, enabling longer ranges and lighter vehicles. Costs have fallen even more dramatically: the price per kilowatt-hour of battery capacity has dropped by over 90% since 2010.
Solid-state batteries, currently in advanced development at several major manufacturers and research institutions, promise further improvements. By replacing the liquid electrolyte in current lithium-ion batteries with a solid material, solid-state batteries offer the potential for higher energy density, faster charging, greater safety, and longer lifespan.

Charging Infrastructure

One of the most frequently cited barriers to EV adoption is charging infrastructure. Significant investment is underway globally to address this. Fast-charging networks are expanding along major highways, and charging times are decreasing — some current systems can deliver several hundred kilometres of range in under 30 minutes.
Home charging remains the most convenient option for the majority of EV owners. Installing a dedicated home charger allows overnight charging that leaves the vehicle fully charged each morning, eliminating range anxiety for typical daily use.

The Broader Ecosystem

The shift to electric vehicles has implications far beyond the vehicles themselves. It is reshaping the mining industry, with increased demand for lithium, cobalt, and nickel. It is challenging traditional automotive business models, as EVs have fewer mechanical components and require less maintenance. And it is opening new opportunities in energy management, as large fleets of EVs represent significant distributed battery storage capacity that could be integrated with the electricity grid.
The transition to electric mobility is not without challenges — particularly around supply chains, charging equity, and the fate of workers in traditional automotive manufacturing. But the direction of travel is clear, and the technology is advancing faster than most forecasters predicted
